This environment was inspired by 2 of my all-time favorite games: Fallout 2 and Sim City 2000. Both of these games use 2D Orthographic backgrounds to effectively give the illusion of a rich 3D environment. I have attempted to pay homage to both by contrasting the stark desolation of a rusty wasteland with low-density residential zoning.
I did all of the modelling, texturing, lighting and post-production to this image (with the exception of the trees...I did not model the trees). Modelling was done in Maya and the scene was rendered using Mental Ray. Additional texture enhancements were added using Photoshop.
Here's a low poly wireframe and texture breakdown for "The Gorge." I modelled and textured this element in under 2 hours.
